Urinary Incontinence
If you are experiencing urinary disorders, your GP can ascertain which particular type of incontinence affects you. You will need to keep a diary of your bladder habits for a minimum of three days and undergo a number of tests to rule out factors that may not cause your incontinence.
The most common tests are:
This is a general check up of the urinary system. It includes vaginal examination to check the status of the pelvic muscles for women, and rectum examination to ascertain whether the prostate gland is inflamed or swollen for men
It is used when there is a suspect of a bacterial infection. A small chemical treated stick is dipped in the urine sample. A change of colour of the stick will reveal the presence of bacteria.
This particular test is usually employed in cases of overflow incontinence. The scan uses high frequency sound waves which map out the inside of the bladder and show how much liquid is left after you have urinated. During this scan a thin, flexible endoscope is inserted into the urethra to reach the bladder. Sedatives and painkillers are usually provided to help relaxing during the test.
This test is also used in cases of overflow incontinence. Doctors usually employ this test when the ultrasound has failed to show the amount of urine left in the bladder. A small catheter is inserted through the urethra to reach the bladder. All the urine left is then drained, so that the amount can be measured.
