Peptic Ulcers Treatments

If the test to detect an infection with Helicobacter Pylori results positive, antibiotic treatment is used to get rid of the bacterium. Bismuth subsalycilate is the most used in combination with another antibiotic and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) which decreases the over production of acid in the stomach. Other combinations of antibiotics employed are: amoxicillin and clarithromicyn or aetronidazole and clarithromicyn.

Usually a week of treatment is sufficient to eliminate Helicobacter Pylori, some people will need to continue with a proton pump inhibitor for other 2-4 weeks.

If the peptic ulcer is not caused by Helicobacter Pylori but has different origins (i.e. stress) the patient will only need an anti-acid treatment with a proton pump inhibitor. Other anti-acids can be taken as alternatives to a proton pump inhibitor. These include: sodium bicarbonate, which is the strongest anti-acid and can give a fast short-term release, aluminium and magnesium (the latest can cause diarrhoea if taken in large doses).

Other drugs used are the histamine blockers, which relieve symptoms and help healing by decreasing the production of acid in the stomach. However, some of these drugs can cause side effect, especially in elderly people.

Patients who undergo to long-term treatment anti-inflammatory medicine like aspirin or ibuprofen to treat other conditions are strongly advised to take gastro-protection drugs to prevent the development of peptic ulcer. These include: PPI, misoprostol – which makes the stomach lining more resistant to acid – and an H2 antagonist.

Your physician normally only recommends surgery when no treatments are effective or to control the symptoms of a peptic ulcer.

The types of operations performed in these cases include:

• Vagotomy,

The surgical severance of vagus nerves fibres in order to reduce acid secretion by the stomach

• Antrectomy

The removal of the pyloric antrum of the stomach

• Pyloroplasty

Which consist in widening the pylorus to facilitate the passage of food from the stomach to the duodenum

Physicians can also recommend surgery when there are serious complications such us perforations
