Ulcers
An endoscopy is the main diagnostic test employed to ascertain the presence of a peptic ulcer. It is performed by using a flexible and thin viewing tube which is passed to the stomach or duodenum; it can be accompanied by a biopsy (the removal of a tiny piece of tissue for examination under a microscopy) if a peptic ulcer is found. A biopsy is useful to determine whether a gastric ulcer is cancerous or caused by an infection with Helicobacter Pylori.
Another common diagnostic procedure are barium contrast xrays, which are taken after the ingestion of a highlighting substance.
The presence of Helicobacter Pylori in the intestinal tissues can also be diagnosed by means of other tests, such as:
Which consist in drinking a solution in water followed by breath samples taken at intervals
A faeces sample is analysed to detect the presence of antibodies against Helicobacter Pylori
Which can also detect the presence of antibodies against Helicobacter Pylori
