Liver transplantation or hepatic transplantation is the surgery replacement of a dysfunctional liver with a healthy one or a portion of it.
Once transplanted a portion of healthy liver can grow to a regular size. In most cases the liver is provided by a donor who has died (this is called orthotropic transplantation). In rare cases a living person donates part of his liver to a patient who needs it, often a family member.
Many people have had a liver transplant and most of case they conduct a normal life after the liver transplant. Physicians can decide on a liver transplant in any case of untreatable liver malfunction.
However, some specific factors, diseases and lifestyles do not allow successful liver transplants.
