Do you use Statins? – can you help us with some research?

Welcome to the first research blog for statin users run by The Patients Voice.

At The Patients Voice we often use blogs to help us design future research with patients by finding out what are the important issues regarding their conditions and medication.  One of our current projects is to understand more about the use of Statins and how they have affected the lives of people with, or threatened with chronic heart disease, or similar condition.

Stains are prescribed to healthy people who are at high risk of heart disease and for people who have had a heart attack or stroke so as to prevent further problems.

Statins work by reducing the levels of ‘bad cholesterol’ (the low-density lipoprotein or LDL). High levels of LDL can lead to the build up of fatty deposits in patients’ arteries and can lead to coronary heart disease.

We are interested in understanding your stories as to how you started to follow particular treatments in this case using Statins.  We are also keen to understand your awareness about Statins and the controversies about the surrounding the use of Statins from within the scientific community.

In particular we are interested in the following questions:-

Please do feel very free to raise any other points you may think would interest other readers of the blog.

There are a number of different Statins available  which include Atorvastatin (known as Lipitor or  Torvast), Fluvastatin (Lescol) , Lovastatin (Mevacor, Altocor or Altoprev), Mevastatin, Pitavastatin (Livalo or  Pitava), Pravastatin (Pravachol, Selektine or Lipostat),  Rosuvastatin (Crestor), Simvastatin (Zocor, Lipex) , or combination therapies such as Vytorin, Advicor, Caduet and Simcor.  We would be keen to know which of these Statins you use when you tell your story on the blog.

If you have not participated in a research before the process is very simple.  To take part, all you need to do is scroll down to the comments area, type in a nickname of your choice and then put your comments into the box. We look forward to reading your comments and, of course, thank you very much for your input!

Remember, a blog is really like having a conversation with lots of people at the same time and so please check back on the blog to see what others have said so that if you would like to add to their thoughts you can.

If you have not already done so we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join The Patients Voice.  In fact we are running rolling research with statin users over the course of the next year so it would be great if you could take part.

About the Patients Voice.

The Patients Voice The Patients Voice is one of the many patient-focused services from Healthcare Landscape. Healthcare Landscape is a medical and healthcare research company, which conducts interviews with all the different kinds of people involved in the healthcare process. They range from patients and their carers, to medical professionals like nurses, pharmacists, physicians and academics. Our mission is to find out what they think and what their experiences have been.

We can interview over the web, at home or at a special research facility; depending on what type of study it is, the choice is often yours. We also run patient diaries and blogs, so you can air your views as honestly and informally as you like. We want to ensure that you have access to the best research experience, and in turn, our clients will learn from your story. Our clients are quite diverse. They range from pharmaceutical or medical device companies, to charities and government bodies. The Patients Voice is open to anyone in the world who wants to give an opinion and would like to try to make a difference. This forum gives you power by allowing you to get YOUR VOICE HEARD.

You should always consult your physician regarding any medical issues. While we attempt to make sure the information on this site is as accurate as possible consulting a medical professional is always to be advised.
