Psoriasis is a skin condition which is immune-mediated, and is not contagious. It can cause as little as a single dimple on one of your finger, fingernails or toe nails (psoriatic nail dystrophy), or affect as much as the majority of your skin surface, your joints, and your eyes. 2% of people (1 in 50) have psoriasis to some degree.
The most commonly affected areas are the back of the elbows and the front of the knees. It often affects the scalp, too, and can, affect any part of the body, including genitals. The standard appearance is of red areas where the skin is thickened and crusty, often with silvery flakes, which come off easily. This appears as patches, which are known as plaques. Psoriasis can also cause inflammation of the joints, which is known as psoriatic arthritis. 10% to 15% of people with psoriasis have psoriatic arthritis.
The cause of psoriasis is not known, but it is believed to be genetic. However there are several factors that are thought to aggravate psoriasis, i.e. stress, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking. People who suffer from this skin condition may suffer from depression and loss of self-esteem, because it may affect their appearance. There is no "cure" for psoriasis, but many people have long periods when it does not reoccur. In some individuals it gets better on its own, whilst others need to apply the various treatments which are available on the current medical market
