Neuropathic pain usually results from disorders of the peripheral nervous system or the central nervous system, causing a pain with one or more nerves; which then sends these pain messages to the brain. Neuropathic pain is often described as burning, stabbing, shooting, or a feeling like an 'electric-shock' kind of pain. As much as 3% of the population is affected, and it is much more common in older people.Neuropathic pain is different from nociceptive pain (pain which is caused by burns, sprains, inflammation etc.), because the pain cannot be resolved with traditional painkillers.

What causes neuropathic pain

A) Various condition
·Trigeminal neuralgia.
·Post herpetic neuralgia (pain following shingles)
·Diabetic neuropathy - a nerve disorder that develops in some people with diabetes
·Phantom limb pain following an amputation.
·Multiple sclerosis.
·HIV infection.
·Alcoholism.
·Cancer a direct result of cancer on peripheral nerves (e.g., compression by a tumor), as a side effect of some chemotherapy drugs, or as a result of radiation treatment
·Atypical facial pain.
·Various other uncommon nerve disorders.

People living with neuropathic pain can become quite anxious, depressed and tired from lack of sleep, due to the impact the pain has on their lives.  These medicines are used to treat neuropathic pain- some can be taken in combination

·traditional' painkillers are tried, but usually only partially help
·'Tricyclic Antidepressant medicines ease neuropathic pain by interfering with the way nerve impulses are transmitted. Even though this group of anti-depressants are not used for depression, they still carry similar side-effects
·Anti-epileptic / anticonvulsants can stop nerve impulses causing pain
·Topical agents- e.g. Capsaicin cream is sometimes used to ease pain if the above medicines do not help, or cannot be used because of side-effects problems. This works by blocking nerves from sending pain messages.
·Opioids are the most consistent effective class of drugs for this condition, however they are not used as first choice and individuals who are prescribed this are carefully supervised
·Dietary supplements
·There are two dietary supplements that have clinical evidence showing them to be effective treatments of diabetic neuropathy; alpha lipoic acid and benfotiamine.
·Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
·Spinal Cord Stimulators And Implanted Spinal Pumps
·Deep Brain Stimulation
·Alternative and Psychological treatments such as stress management, counselling, cognitive behaviour therapy, meditation, chiropractice, massage, and acupuncture
