I`ve had an on-going problem with infection deep in a root. It`s been drilled about 4 times with the most horrendous files/drills! I`ve been told that it`s almost impossible to clear as it`s right at the tip of the root. My dentist says I still shouldn`t have it removed but I would like to, just to get rid of the dull pain which is always associated with that tooth (molar). Ive since had it crowned with a `new procedure/product`. I think it`s basically a silicone alternative to gold or porcelaine. It is all very high tech and made by laser guided equipment! Cost is about £800.00 per tooth. However, I got a deal (50%)as it was new to my surgery and they wanted to `push` the product. I have to say it`s no better/worse that any other crown but it last`s longer than other products apparently. As far as costs at dentists are concerned. I have always paid for my treatment (43 years old) as an adult. The NHS seem to have abandoned Dental Care so I guess unless an alternative is found people on lower incomes will end up with rotten teeth just like Victorian times.

i had vaneers put on my front 6 teeth about 3 years ago and one still hurts but apparently the correction procedure which involves having the nerve yanked out is so terrible i wont bother.

My dentist has "gone private" - now instead of 21 quid a year I'm getting "great value treatment" at a bargain 49 pounds! How can that be progress? Also, I've had several letters that give me 2 options - pay a monthly subscription to an insurance I don't want (and already have most of covered with travel insurance) or pay a yearly fee to remain on their books! What they don't say is that they are willing to keep people on pay-as-you go basis which works out a lot cheaper. Of course, they don't mention this in the letter...

Probable cause:- hitting my head with something heavy (1/2 brick, mallett, kerbstone) being the only way to control head pain. This may have been the reason why after several attempts, the crown was not replaced on a molar. At the same time the practice was shedding NHS patients - me included. Years passed and there was no treatment anywhere to repair my crumbling munchers or even to fill holes that became almost craters. However when an abscese formed i was able to visit the Primary care in Heavitree Hospital. The prescrbed anti-biotics worked so the next week i attended for treatment. Unfortunately the Dentist was shocked to see the damage & after some X-Rays & a good look advised me to attend a specialist at Wonford. The result was total clearance in the day care ward. The speed of treatment was amazing, as from initial visit to removal was only about 3 1/2 weeks. The internet proved its worth as my wife was able to find a practice to sort out dentures. Thinking NHS would provide falsies, i was shocked & paid the asking price. The care at the Practice was excellent and Christmas passed with much humour. So why am blogging? An old adage comes to mind; prevention is better than cure. Despite a lot of hot air from "powers that be", surely the increasing problem with NHS providing Dental Treatment is something that needs to pulled to the fore. My little grumble in no way reflects the real quality i've received.

My Dentist went private a few years back and I chose to remain with him ,mainly because he is very good at his job and I trust him totally . I would have prefered to remain on the NHS due to costs , but it is hard to get taken on with a NHS Dentist . which I found when I moved house . I will have to rethink things as I am now a pensioner .

Haven't had good experiences with dentists. Trusted one years back who filled every tooth in my head, performed root canal treatment everywhere he could, did most of it when I was pregnant to save me money but obviously made a bit himself, and then went awol over night never to be seen again - now 25 years later all those fillings are falling apart - my dentist has spent the last three years giving me antibiotics for abscesses then he retired and the next dentist decided I could have half the work done national health and half private - she booked me in for 4 months time - well she only works a couple of days a week, when I went to my last appointment she was off sick and I was in agony, no other NHS dentists in our town, soI got in the car and drove to a city a few miles away - there there are loads of NHS dentists, so I called in on one and they saw me within 5 minutes - I've been with them ever since, They've removed 4 teeth, rebuilt several and I'm having falsies soon - and all before I would have had my second appointment with nmy previous dentist - Interesting!! Oh and so far it's cost me less that £50!! Looks like I'm having some luck at last.
