Obesity is a condition when fatty tissue in humans exceeds what is generally considered healthy for a person’s given height. Doctors and scientists can determine obesity by assessing a person’s body fat, with the theory that men with more than 25% body fat and women with more than 30% body fat are obese.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines state that excessive body weight can be a contributory factor to a large number of medical conditions, particularly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes type 2, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis.
Obesity can be measured in ABSOLUTE or RELATIVE terms. In Absolute terms the BMI (Body Mass Index) is used by dividing a person’s weight by the square of his/her height. If the person BMI is 30 or higher, then they are classed as being obese. In RELATIVE terms the person’s waist circumference or waist-hip circumference ratio is measured to see if it is within the ‘normal’ measurements for a person of their height and build. If it exceeds, then they are classed as being obese.
