Do you suffer from Migraines?  – A new research blog from The Patients Voice!

In the United States, according to the US government funded National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), at present just over 10% of the population have been diagnosed as migraine sufferers.  More concerning is that over 55% of the population suffered from migraines but have not been diagnosed.  It is believed that a similar diagnostic rate also applies to other countries.

Because of this fact The Patients Voice have decided to launch a research blog into the diagnosis of migraines and to find out more about the effectiveness of the different treatments available?

Migraine headaches are more common to women than to men.   A typical migraine headache lasts from a few hours to three days.  Normal symptoms include nausea, vomiting, photophobia (increased sensitivity to bright light), and hyperacusis (increased sensitivity to noise).  Around 30% of migraines suffers’ perceive what is called an aura.  That is atypical visual, olfactory, or other sensory experiences that are a sign that the migraine will soon start.

We are particularly interested in the following questions?

  • When did you start suffering from migraines?  How easy or difficult would you say was the diagnostic process?
  • What causes your migraines?  What are the main symptoms? If you have an aura can you tell us a bit more about it?
  • What treatment have you received?  How effective has it been?
  • Have you had to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle because of your migraines?
  • What advice would you give to somebody who has just started to suffer from migraines?

Obviously these are just suggestions so please bring up anything you think other readers of the blog will find of interest.  Please do include links to any site you have found helpful.

Remember, a blog is really like having a conversation with lots of people at the same time and so please check back on the blog to see what others have said so that if you would like to add to their thoughts you can.

To take part, all you need to do is scroll down to the comments area, type in a nickname of your choice and then put your comments into the box. We look forward to reading your comments and, of course, thank you very much for your input!
