Around 85% to 90% of all lung cancers are non-small cell lung cancer. Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) fall into three sub-types. The cells in these sub-types differ in size, shape, and chemical make-up. The three sub-types are:-
Squamous cell carcinoma; about 25% to 30% of all lung cancer is of this kind. They are linked to smoking and tend to be found in the middle of the lungs, near a bronchus.

Adenocarcinoma; this type accounts for about 40% of lung cancer. It is usually found in the outer part of the lung.

Large-cell (undifferentiated) carcinoma; about 10% to 15% of lung cancer are this type. It can start in any part of the lung. It tends to grow and spread quickly, which makes it harder to treat.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) can be treated in a number of different ways:-
• Surgery. There are different types of surgical procedures. There is a pneumonectomy where the entire lung is removed, a lobectomy where a section or lobe of the lung is removed, or a Segmentectomy or wedge resection where part of a lobe is removed. There is also a new kind of surgery for people with early stage lung cancer called video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).
• Radiation therapy
• Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
• Chemotherapy
• Drug treatments such as Tarceva ® and Avastin ®.
