Hypertension
Hypertension on its own usually has no symptoms. However some people with severe hypertension can report headaches, tiredness, difficulty sleeping, dizziness and blurred vision.
It popular culture hypertension is often associated with stress and anxiety. However, although stress does have an effect on people that already have hypertension, it does not cause it.
A common factor to people suffering from hypertension is sodium sensitivity; or sensitivity to salt. About 60% of the people with hypertension are sensitive to salt. This is because increasing amounts of salt in someone’s bloodstream makes the cells release water to try and equalize the amount of salt in the bloodstream, which in turn increases the pressure on the blood vessel walls. Too little calcium or potassium has an effect on blood pressure.
Hypertension is also associated with age – over time the blood vessels stiffen which can mean increased arterial blood pressure.
