Hypertension
Hypertension is the medical term for ‘high blood pressure’.
People with hypertension can either have ‘essential’ hypertension, which is when there is no known medical cause for their high blood pressure, or they can have ‘secondary’ hypertension, which is when their high blood pressure is as a result of another ‘primary’ medical condition, such as a stroke or kidney disease.
People who have hypertension are at higher risk for renal failure, arterial aneurysms, heart attacks, heart failure and strokes.
The incidence of hypertension is very high. In the UK approximately 40% of the adult population suffers from hypertension.
