Hyperlipidemia occurs when there are high levels of fat molecules called lipids present in the bloodstream. The two main lipids which cause Hyperlipidemia, are high contents of cholesterol and triglyceride. Having high levels of both these lipids in your blood are risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease (CHD), and in some cases acute pancreatitis.
Having high deposits of fat in the blood vessels causes plaque to build up, which leads to the blood vessels to become narrow and eventually blocked. If arteries become blocked this can lead to heart attacks, strokes and death. Taking advice and treatment to low cholesterol helps to reduce the high lipid levels in the blood and prevent these illnesses from occurring. Hyperlipidemia can occur at any age, however it is more common to occur in adulthood. It is classed into four types I, III, IV or V. Hyperlipidemia is diagnosed by a physician, from blood tests.
What are the Symptoms of Hyperlipidemia?
• yellow nodules of fat, in the skin beneath eyes, elbows, knees and tendons.
• enlarged liver and spleen.
• discomfort or tenderness in the upper abdomen
• a whitish ring around the eye.
Lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides is the significant factor of reducing hyperlipidemia. This is done by:
• low fat diet,
• smoking and increasing exercise levels.
If these do not reduce the high lipid content then the patients is prescribed the following:
• Statins are a group of drugs used for lowering the levels of LDL cholesterol in the body and reduce triglycerides to a small extent
• Fibrates to reduce triglyceride levels
• Nicotinates a member of the vitamin B group and, in high doses it reduces triglycerides they are mainly used when a person has not responded to other medications
• Omega 3-6 essential fatty lower triglycerides and, at high levels, may lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol
• Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors decreases the absorption of cholesterol from the small intestine, can be used on its own or with a statin.
