Hepatitis C Virus is a systemicinfectious disease that can cause liver inflammation. It is often asymptomatic, but if it develops into chronic hepatitis it can result to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and liver cancer. The symptoms can be medically managed, and in some cases patients can be cleared of the virus by a long course of anti-viral medicines. However unlike Hepatitis B no vaccine against hepatitis C is available. Research has shown that early medical intervention is helpful, however the symptoms at first are quite mild, thus people with HCV usually do not know they have the virus, and therefore do not seek treatment. Hepatitis C is a worldwide disease, infecting an estimated 170 million people around the globe worldwide (4 million in the United States). The virus is quite high with HIV patients, based on co-infection transmission.
There are two types of Hepatitis C, acute and chronic.
Acute Hepatitis C usually last no longer than six months, and usually between 60% to 70% of people infected, develop no or very mild symptoms during the acute phase. Individual’s who do not clear of the virus in the acute phase, usually develop Chronic Hepatitis C.
Symptoms
a short, mild, flu-like illness nausea and vomiting ,diarrhea, loss of appetite weight loss
jaundice (yellow skin and whites of eyes, darker yellow urine and pale faeces) itchy skin.
Chronic hepatitis C usually develops when an individual has not cleared of the infection after a six month period. Again this is also asymptomatic (without symptoms) and it is usually discovered accidentally. The rate of chronic hepatitis C progression, depends on the person.
Symptoms of Chronic Hepatitis C are similar to the symptoms of Acute Hepatitis C in the early stages, but as the virus progresses it causes muscle and joint pain, intermittent low-grade fevers, itching, sleep disturbances, abdominal pain (especially in the right upper quadrant), appetite changes, diarrhea, dyspepsia, cognitive changes, depression, headaches, and if untreated cirrhosis.
