Hepatitis B is a virus that causes an infection and inflammation in the liver. The disease was originally known as "serum hepatitis" and has a high incidence rate in parts of Asia and Africa. The current percentage of the world's population currently infected with Hepatitis B is estimated at 3 to 6%, but up to a third have been exposed. In acute Hepatitis B cases, the infection is usually clear in weeks; but in chronic cases it can be quite long-standing. Chronic hepatitis B may eventually cause liver cirrhosis and of hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), which is quite fatal, because it has a poor response to chemotherapy, and in extreme cases can lead to death.

Around 95% of adults and teenagers who become infected with Hepatitis B, usually make a full recovery and develop protective immunity to the virus. The prognosis for children however is reduced, because children are less likely to clear the infection. Only 5% of newborns that attain the infection from their mother at birth will clear the infection. The prognosis increases with age; children infected between the one to six years of age, 70% of them will clear the infection. There is a Hepatitis B vaccination available, that prevents the disease from occurring.

loss of appetite and weight loss
dark yellow urine,
pale faeces
itchy skin

Hepatitis B can also lead onto other illnesses like Hepatitis D and Polyarteritis nodosa .

How Hepatitis Bcan be transmitted through

exposure to infected blood or body fluids (e.g.unprotected sexual contact, blood transfusions)
re-use of contaminated needles & syringes
transmission from mother to child during childbirth – as high as 90% dependent on the type of Hepatitis B
This risk is as high as 90% if the mother is also positive for the hepatitis B e antigen.
