Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that can eventually develop into AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Around 9 out of 10 people with HIV progress to AIDS after 10-15 years. After developing AIDS, most infected individuals die from this disease because there are more open to infections or malignancies due to their immune system being weak from the virus. Anti-retroviral Therapy is a treatment given to HIV, and AIDS patients to increase their life expectancy, and is available in most countries. Without this therapy, research has shown that people who develop AIDS die normally within a year. As of January 2006, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized on December 1, 1981, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in the world. It is estimated that about 0.6% of the world's population is infected with HIV. Globally, around 46 million people are currently living with HIV.
HIV has four stages: the first stage is the Incubation period which lasts between two to four weeks. Second stage is Acute infection, which lasts an average of 28 days and can include symptoms such as fever, lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes). The third stage is called the Latency stage which shows few or no symptoms and can last anywhere from two weeks to over twenty years. The fourth and final stage is AIDS.
