Cancer (Lung)
Lung cancer is a form of cancer which causes an uncontrolled growth of cells in the tissues of the lung. It may lead to metastasis, invasion of adjacent tissues and infiltration beyond the lungs. It is the most common form of cancer in the world and the second most common in the UK.
The vast majority of cases (up to the 90%) are caused by smoking. The remaining 10% derives from passive smoking, genetic factors, and exposure to toxic gases, air pollution and certain minerals and chemicals. Recent studies have shown that side-stream smoke – smoke coming from the lit end of a smoldering cigarette – can be more dangerous than direct smoke inhalation.
When cancer originates in the lung is called primary lung cancer, while if it starts in other parts of the body and subsequently spreads to the lungs is called secondary lung cancer.
Primary lung cancer is then divided in small cell and non-small cell lung cancer.
