Complementary back pain therapies

Complementary therapies can ease back pain symptoms i.e. Alexander Technique, physiotherapy, spinal manipulation, shiatsu, and acupuncture.

The Alexander Technique raises awareness of posture, balance, and co-ordination. It also demonstrates the correct way to hold and move the body and release tension. Prior to starting with the Alexander Technique check with the GP to determine the nature of the back pain.
A qualified physiotherapist ( who can improve your range of movement), an osteopath ( who treats the skeleton and muscles), or chiropractor (who treats joint, muscle, and bone problems) may all be able to help. Treatments may be beneficial in the short-term for severe back pain, or nerve root pain.

Shiatsu
and acupuncture may ease symptoms and promote relaxation.

Shiatsu
is a Japanese technique described as 'finger pressure' therapy. It is a type of massage and is used by the application of pressure to energy lines in the body.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine of very fine needles inserted at key points in the body. The treatment encourages the body to release endorphins the body’s natural painkillers and stimulates nerve and muscle tissue.

Some people find these alternative therapies beneficial but they may not suit everyone so it is advisable to check with your GP before commencing treatment.
