Back Pain

Symptoms of Back Pain

The symptoms are an ache or pain on the back. Back pain usually clears up fairly fast but it is recommended to get medical advice as with any medical condition.
If the following symptoms occur alongside back pain it is advisable to see the GP as soon as possible; weight loss and fever, swelling or inflammation on the back, pain in the chest or at the top of the back, pain in the legs, a recent injury to the back, inability to pass urine.

Underlying causes

Strained or pulled muscles as well as muscle imbalances are usually associated with the cause of back pain. Back pain will continue as long as these imbalances continue as pressure builds up along the spine.

The mobile areas of the spine, i.e. the facet joints which have synovial membranes suddenly become trapped or pinched this produces inflammation in the membrane creating more pressure and pain. The synovial membranes, in fact, works as cushions for the spine. Symptoms can include muscle spasms, pain when walking or pain going down a leg. Bending forward should, however, alleviate pain. If the pain goes on longer than 3 months or if there is a possibility of sciatica a more definitive diagnosis will be needed.
For people under 50 back pain could be degenerative disc disease or herniation. For people over 50 back pain could be osteoarthritis, fractures of infection. Stress, depression and repressed anger can also contribute to back pain.

The Patients Voice The Patients Voice is one of the many patient-focused services from Healthcare Landscape. Healthcare Landscape is a medical and healthcare research company, which conducts interviews with all the different kinds of people involved in the healthcare process. They range from patients and their carers, to medical professionals like nurses, pharmacists, physicians and academics. Our mission is to find out what they think and what their experiences have been.

We can interview over the web, at home or at a special research facility; depending on what type of study it is, the choice is often yours. We also run patient diaries and blogs, so you can air your views as honestly and informally as you like. We want to ensure that you have access to the best research experience, and in turn, our clients will learn from your story. Our clients are quite diverse. They range from pharmaceutical or medical device companies, to charities and government bodies. The Patients Voice is open to anyone in the world who wants to give an opinion and would like to try to make a difference. This forum gives you power by allowing you to get YOUR VOICE HEARD.
