Alzheimer Disease is a terminal illness which usually occurs in people over 65 years old although a less-prevalent form does exists in people under this age. The disease can begin many years before it is eventually diagnosed. This is because in its early stages, symptoms like short-term memory loss, confusion are usually thought to be stress or age related.   However as the individual’s memory-loss deteriorates, tests done byhealthcare specialists and physician s help to confirm whether they have Alzheimer’s disease or not. The symptoms Alzheimer patients present with are similar to other conditions such as brain tumour, depression, drug misuse. Due to the fact that there is no basic test for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease, diagnosis usually involves ruling conditions like these.

Alzheimer's disease is related to plaques and tangles in the brain, but the cause and progression is not perfectly understood. Alzheimer’s currently remains incurable, and it is not known whether current treatments help slow the progression, or simply manage the symptoms. Mental stimulation, exercise and a balanced diet are often recommended to patients, as a possible prevention and as a sensible way of managing the disease. As the disease progresses, the patient will advance from mild cognitive impairment, to advanced stages of dementia, then finally reaching a severe stage of dementia. Individual variations in the presentation and development of the symptoms can make a patient's disease difficult to classify into one specific stage. Once Alzheimer's has been diagnosed, the average life expectancy is approximately seven years, only three percent of the patients live more than fourteen years.

Symptoms for mild-to-moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's disease:

·confusion,

·anger,

·mood swings,

·depression and insomnia

·language, reading and writing breakdown

·long-term memory loss,

·senses decline

·loss of minor, then major bodily functions,

·urinary incontinence

·loss of independence

Although these symptoms are common, each individual has unique experiences.

In the early stage, people with Alzheimer's can usually care for themselves. At the moderate stage, progressive deterioration seriously hinders the possibility of independence due to memory-loss and motor skill mobility. As the disease progresses the person may not recognize close relatives, unaware of their own deficits, become delusional and aggressive. In the advanced later stages lost of language, unable to feed oneself, and being bedridden can create stress and depression for relatives and caregivers, increasing the likelihood of moving the patient from home care to other long-term care facilities.

Medication can be prescribed when Alzheimer's disease is in its aggressive form, because it works by blocking chemicals that are often released in large amounts in people with the disease. These chemicals that are released in people with Alzheimer’s, damage nerve cells and block messages getting to and from the brain. Research has also suggested that the Herb Ginko Biloba improves blood flow to the brain, which could delay the progress of Alzheimer's disease; however this is not clinically proven.

In the USA there are 4 million cases of people with Alzheimer's. Around 9 million people had a family member with Alzheimer's and  those over 85 years of age in the USA, nearly 50% have Alzheimer's.
